TEXAS ROOTS · KANSAS CITY LEGACY
A different way to play quarterback.
A multi-sport upbringing, a prolific Texas Tech career and a defining partnership with Kansas City.
East Texas, three sports
Mahomes grew up in Whitehouse, Texas, and competed in football, baseball and basketball. His father, Pat Mahomes, pitched in Major League Baseball. Patrick was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 but chose Texas Tech rather than signing a baseball contract.

At Texas Tech from 2014 through 2016, Mahomes developed as a passer in a high-volume offense. He initially also played baseball, then focused on football. His final college season brought 5,052 passing yards and the Sammy Baugh Trophy.
SourceA year to learn
Kansas City selected Mahomes tenth overall in 2017. He spent most of that season behind Alex Smith and made his first NFL start in the regular-season finale. The transition to starter came in 2018, when Smith moved to Washington.
SourceAn immediate transformation
Mahomes’s first full season as a starter produced 5,097 passing yards and 50 touchdown passes. The 2018 NFL MVP award recognized that breakout; the following season ended with Kansas City winning Super Bowl LIV.
SourceThe championship years
Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid kept Kansas City at the center of the AFC. Across the 2018–2024 seasons, the Chiefs reached seven straight AFC Championship Games and five Super Bowls. Wins in LIV, LVII and LVIII each brought Mahomes the game’s MVP award.
SourceA career still unfolding
A second NFL MVP season in 2022 and consecutive Super Bowl wins gave his career a championship focus. The 2024 run ended in a Super Bowl loss, and Kansas City missed the 2025 postseason. Historical achievements remain separate here from unverified claims about current availability.
SourceThe turning point was a change of role
Mahomes’s route from Texas Tech to Kansas City was not a continuous run of full seasons as a starter. His college production established a record of high-volume passing; his rookie NFL year then placed him behind Alex Smith, with one start at the end of the schedule. The 2018 breakout belongs to his second NFL season, even though it was his first full season leading the offense.
That distinction matters when reading his early career totals. A comparison that includes 2017 as an ordinary starting season understates his production after he took over. It also helps explain why the 2017 draft and the 2018 MVP belong to different stages of the story, rather than one “rookie breakthrough.”
SourceSourceSourceIndividual production and the championship story
The biography has two overlapping threads: the rise of a passer and Kansas City’s postseason runs. The two league MVP seasons recognize regular-season work. The Super Bowl MVP awards recognize individual championship games. Keeping those threads separate avoids making every change in his passing totals sound like an explanation for a team’s playoff result.
