Build a like-for-like comparison

Use the shortlist as an identification worksheet. Write down the year, product, card number, parallel, serial number, autograph status and grade before looking at sale prices. Mahomes’s 2017 Donruss and Donruss Optic entries use different card numbers; a seller calling both a “Rated Rookie” is not enough to identify the same release.

When two listings look similar, compare their front and back photographs against the linked identification reference. Exclude a different parallel or grade from your price comparison. If a listing does not show enough detail, leave its identification unresolved rather than treating a lower asking price as a bargain. Our selection is a guide to releases, not a ranked investment list.

Three things to match.

The card. Match year, product, card number and parallel. Base, numbered and autograph versions are different items.
The condition. Read the grade and check the certification number. Card and autograph grades can differ.
The comparison. Use completed sales of the same version and grade. Asking prices are not market value.

Base, parallel, rookie and autograph: what's different?

A base card is the standard version. Parallels change an attribute such as colour or numbering. Rookie cards relate to the player's rookie releases; an autograph is a separate feature, not proof of rarity or value.

Which one should I collect first?

Start with a design and price range you enjoy. Prizm, Optic and Donruss are useful identification starting points; this shortlist is not a value ranking.
